Failed buy setup gives an excellent short opportunity

14 08 2008

Here is a setup that is my own personal variant on the TD Combo or TD Sequential.  I have talked about this many times but it goes like this:  A stock is trending lower and gives a buy signal, it then breaks the stop loss point only to come back up after a bounce to that same stop loss point.  What always seems to happen is that it runs into heavy resistance and then heads lower.  This strategy worked like a charm on Cintas (CTAS).

Here is that same setup for MNST.  As a result, I went short today.  As an added bonus, both Sequential and Combo gave almost the same readings.

Short Price Projections (CTAS)

Entering a trade is only half the battle.  You always need an exit strategy.

The preplanned exit is especially important when you short a stock because the short covering rallies can be fast and furious.  Here is my plan for CTAS, which I shorted last month.  I like to use the ABC pattern as a way to determine a price target.  Basically, I take the point difference between the A and B point and then subtract that number from the C point, giving me a target.  I learned this method from Tom O’Brien and I’m amazed how well it works.

Short Cintas (CTAS)

I love the pattern that has developed in Cintas (CTAS).  I see this short setup over and over again and when it looks like the market is going to turn down for a while I just run a scan for it.  What I look for is a stock that has already broken below its TD Sequential stop-loss point and is then climbing back up for a retest.  I enter the short on the retest and use the lowest low between the 1 and 13 count of the TD Sequential countdown as my buy-stop.
