Not that any technical analysis has worked in this market, but the XLF just finished a TD Sequential buy countdown.

Monthly Dow Jones Industrial Average TD Sequential Buys

18 10 2008

Inspired by the historical chart in the previous post, I looked at the monthly TD Sequential buy signals for the Dow 30.  I’m not sure what to read into this result, but there have only been two completed countdowns on the monthly since the 1920s, both of which directly preceded the two largest bull markets of the 20th century.

Pretty interesting.

Sequential Buy Signals

16 10 2008

If you have noticed, I have been using TD Combo signals during this market.  It seems to be superior to TD Sequential when the market is making large and fast price moves.  While I have no hard evidence for such a conclusion, it is just the sense I get.  I do believe, however, that TD Sequential is more effective over longer time frames and also seems to work better for the indexes.

Here is an example.  In the figure I have marked the TD Sequential buy signals during the dot com bear market.  Notice how well the bottoms were picked out.

The moral of the story is to keep watching those signals, no matter how horrible the market is.

Market Monitor Tutorial

1 10 2008

Market Monitor Movie

Pradeep Bonde from the Stockbee blog made a reference to a small movie that I put together for my other website, MarketTurbulence.com.  In the tutorial, I explain how the Market Monitor breadth chart is constructed and how I apply it using Blocks 3.1 (soon to be StockFinder).

If you use Blocks, you can download the layout after registering for MarketTurbulence.com.  I also have constructed many of the DeMark indicators, including TD Sequential, TD Combo, TD REI, and TD Pressure.  These required a lot of time and effort and I originally wanted to use them for myself.  Blocks does an excellent job of scanning through charts and is a perfect match for the DeMark indicators.  After receiving many requests, I have made them available over on MarketTurbulence.com.

Possible Sequential/Combo Play

16 09 2008

Here is a free one.  Be careful and respect those stops but here is a possible long trade.  RIO has been killed recently and is setup for a bounce.  Here are the Combo and Sequential charts.

Anglogold Ashanti also finished up a Combo countdown.

Failed buy setup gives an excellent short opportunity

14 08 2008

Here is a setup that is my own personal variant on the TD Combo or TD Sequential.  I have talked about this many times but it goes like this:  A stock is trending lower and gives a buy signal, it then breaks the stop loss point only to come back up after a bounce to that same stop loss point.  What always seems to happen is that it runs into heavy resistance and then heads lower.  This strategy worked like a charm on Cintas (CTAS).

Here is that same setup for MNST.  As a result, I went short today.  As an added bonus, both Sequential and Combo gave almost the same readings.

Recent TD Combo and TD Sequential Buy Signals

11 08 2008

I put together a gallery of charts in the S&P 500 that have signaled TD Combo and Sequential Buys (only the Combo charts are shown).  The only chart that I could find that hasn’t worked was MNST.  The layouts and scans are available at MarketTurbulence.com.

All Combo and Sequential indicators are now available on MarketTurbulence.com.  Go check it out.

US Steel (X) Short Setup

31 07 2008

X is setting up for a sweet short.  I find it hard to believe that the steel sector is going to lead the market on the next bull run.  I also know that you should always sell the cyclicals when they look the cheapest (earnings are highest at the peak).  With that in mind, check out the Sequential Sell and Combo Sell charts.  I would look to get short in the area of $180 if the volume dies off a bit.

Sequential and Combo Layouts Complete

29 07 2008
Here are what the final TD Sequential and TD Combo layouts will look like for Blocks 3.1.  With these layouts it is possible to scan for every stock, ETF, or index that has either completed a TD Sequential, TD Combo, or both countdowns.  I am now just waiting for the next Blocks release.  Notice how I have stop loss points drawn in only when they are appropriate, which is an improvement from the older version.  I will write up a full discussion on how to use the layouts when I release them on MarketTurbulence.com.

Timing the Trade and DeMark

23 07 2008

I have been listening to Tom O’Brien for several years.  Tom has developed a trading system that he calls “Timing the Trade” which he has used to great effect for many years.  Tom’s system buys and sells countertrend moves and is based on price and volume.  It is not a very easy system to learn but I have found that coupling it with another countertrend system, like TD Sequential and TD Combo, one can drastically simplify the process of finding and analyzing charts.

Using the charts that I have put together using Blocks 3.1, it is easy to find TD Sequential and TD Combo sell signals.  Using Timing the Trade it is possible to either confirm or eliminate the buy or sell decision.  Let’s look at SYNA.  As you can see, there are both Sequential and Combo sell signals with the current price being close to the stop loss point, making it a low risk entry point.  Although there have been several days since the sell signal was given, that particular sell level often holds as resistance for a secondary short point.  This is where Timing the Trade comes in.  In O’Brien’s method, he likes to look at “swing points” that he defines as points on the chart with high, abnormal, volume spikes.  Tom thinks of these points as areas were the most traders agreed on price.  The key is to compare later prices with the “swing point” bars.  If the price comes into the “swing point” with higher volume expect it to continue through it, if it comes into the “swing” with less volume the price will bounce off of it.

The Sequential and Combo charts say to short it, but looking at the volume, one can see that the volume is expanding.  So using Timing the Trade, I would think twice before shorting it.

TD Sequential Update

14 07 2008

Thanks to the improvements made by Kuf in the latest Blocks release I have now completed a full TD Sequential chart.  This chart is fully contained and easily shareable.  I made a couple improvements in how I array the data, which makes the chart I show below fully backtestable (not a word, I know).

More improvement will be coming soon.  I will also code up TD Combo.

Video Test

I’ve been playing around with some screencast tools. Here is a 10 min video. I realize that the presentation could be cleaned up a bit, but I would appreciate any constructive criticism.  Hopefully I’ll have more to come.
